Do You Know These 3 Business Myths?

Napoleon hillI’ve read that successful people set their goals, keep their expectations high, and are creative in developing strategies to reach their goals.

Do you think that part of knowing our strengths and weaknesses, is knowing what help we need in being able to use the strategies we learn?

What if we have the greatest strategy in the world planned, but if we’re not implementing? Nothing happens, Right?

So what do you do?

Develop your action plan for meeting your goals. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

There are a couple of myths about taking action…

Myth #1 – “When we’ve learned a new strategy, we often think the hardest part is over.”

  • But, implementation is the real next step . And, it can be very difficult to start, be persistent, and consistent with our new strategies.

Even though we may plan to apply what we learn and really want to, we usually don’t have an action plan set about to reach out goals.  We can immerse ourselves in marketing information.  Watch what others are doing.  And decide what we ‘should’ be doing. Yet, it’s hard to commit, because we just aren’t sure.

So, we often don’t pursue the goal we really want. We underestimate the challenges of implementing what we learned and our new strategies.

But, in order to learn and move forward?

  • We have to at least start.

Myth #2 – “Most people resist change?”

  • No, most people are open to change when they understand why and how it can help.

We may initially resist, but can become brilliant with our implementation over time as we start to understand the great benefits.

It’s a lot easier to implement a plan when someone who has already done it helps you decide the steps.  And then, when the doubts creep up, they remind you to stay the path.  Because if you do, you will arrive.

Myth #3 – “It’s all about taking actions.”

  • No, it’s about taking the right actions.

And, that’s what freezes people up and they move to busy work.

Of course, we need to take action to implement our business strategy. And of course, in business, it seems that we are always taking action, filling up the amount of time we have with activities.

To answer this question, you have to first identify what you think are the right actions.

  • Take actions, even if you make the changes as you go.

Small business owners need to become strategic and turn their plans into specific objectives. Then take actions and correct the activities as they work their plan.

The information you give is priceless –I like how you broke down the steps – but if I have to make up my own steps it takes time. We know it’s our business and work – but, when you say step one through 5 I get it!  My ah-ha moment – was with the plan – a road map – having it planned out – it is like creating how many miles we’ll cover on a trip, when we are going to have lunches – and this is how I’m seeing this business plan – it’s a road map , it may change along the way and that’s OK.” Patty Davis  Owner at Z Sisters

Great myths to re-frame. I especially like #3. Taking action and creating are steps that you have to take when you grow your business yet, not all action is good action. You can be busy all of the time and still get nothing done. Action just to be doing something does not move your business forward. Strategic Inspired Action does.

Thought provoking post Donna … I agree partly with you when you say that, Myth #3 – “It’s all about taking actions.” is a myth, and that it is more important to be taking the RIGHT action – but so many people don’t take ANY action …. so really is n’t it better to FIRST start taking some action – when you’ll discover that some of those actions might not be the right ones – in which case you’ll course correct – but at least you’re off the starting blocks? If we have to figure out what might be the right actions first – this may lead to procrastination – and in-action. Just some observations I have made from my own experiences when I have dithered because I have wanted to make that right action and was not sure just what it was.

I agree completely, Moira – I was hoping to convey that when you get a strategic plan, then take take action and correct as you go. But, taking actions without a plan, may be just filling in time and avoiding the plan completely. So glad you stopped by! Thank you 🙂

    Hi Donna,

Thanks for pointing out these myths, you are right when it comes to taking action in business. You need to direct those actions toward the right things. If you take action that actually hurts you then your going in the wrong direction.
